Now more than ever, renters need to fight for our right to housing and defend our communities. The London Renters Union is hiring! Do you want to work for a radical, fighting union as our New Branches Organiser to build the power of renters hardest hit by the housing crisis?
Set up by campaigns and local housing groups from across the city, we’ve achieved a lot in the past two and a half years. We’ve supported scores of our members to win improvements to their housing situation by standing up for their rights and taking direct action. We’ve linked up with other housing groups to force the Tory government to announce an end to no-fault evictions. During COVID, more than 30,000 renters accessed our model letters and resources and our Can’t Pay Won’t Pay campaign helped push the government to make important concessions. In the past few months, we’ve trained hundreds of renters to understand their rights and to resist evictions.
The role of the New Branches Organiser is to support the emergence, growth and collective leadership of new LRU groups and their successful development into full LRU branches. In due course, this new organiser will be asked to focus on one particular group to support it to become a powerful LRU branch. They will also help develop processes, resources and trainings that support LRU’s growth.
We’re looking for someone with previous experience of supporting and coaching people to use organising tools to build power in a grassroots context. We’re looking for an organiser who believes in the power of community to create change and who can inspire and empower our members to build collective power and win.
The pay for this position is £28,000 per year (with an 8% subsidy for parents or others with financial caring responsibilities). The post is 30 hours per week, usually spread over 4 days, but with regular needs for evening and weekend work to accommodate member availability. This position is fixed term for 2 years, with the intention of the role becoming permanent depending on the union’s financial situation. Holiday pay, sick pay, expenses and money towards counselling is provided to all workers.
The post is currently home-based, due to COVID restrictions, with opportunities to work from the LRU office in Liverpool Street as deemed safe. The role will also include some level of travel around London, as is deemed safe and appropriate.
