Has your rent gone up recently or are you worried about the cost of housing? You’re not alone. More than 1 million renters per month are having their rent put up every month and LRU members are facing rent increases of £5,000 per year or more.
Rent increases force us out of our communities and leave us without enough for food and other essentials. Estate agents and landlords are out of control – and while they get richer, we get poorer.
But there is an alternative. The Scottish government has frozen rents. It’s currently illegal for landlords to raise the rent or evict tenants. That’s a huge victory for Living Rent, Scotland’s tenants union. Rent controls are common across Europe.
We can win the same here but only if we get organised and make the connections between the fight for affordable housing and wider struggles against exploitation and oppression.
Join us for an evening of discussion ahead of our December 3 #RentFreezeNow day of action.
