Get Involved

This is an ambitious project, so we need lots of help to make it happen. In order to win big, we need the union to grow big! Have a read of the different ways you can get involved and drop us an email at hello@londonrentersunion.org or fill out the form below.

1. Live in Newham? Join the Union

People who live in Newham can join the union by going to https://londonrentersunion.org/newham-join/.

2. Live outside of Newham? Join a local group or help set one up

As well as building our first full branch in Newham, we’ve also set up local groups in different parts of London that are helping renters to organise and planning the launch of more branches across the city. Fill out the form below to be put in touch with the local group closest to you, or maybe we could work together to set up a group in your area.

3. Spread the word

We need to get the word out that the London Renters Union is launching. Spread the word on social media. Sign up for updates on our website https://londonrentersunion.org/ follow us on facebook @LondonRentersUnion and Twitter @LDNRentersUnion.

Help others find out at your community group, workplace, place of worship or school. Email hello@londonrentersunion.org and we’ll post some leaflets, posters and stickers for you to put up.

4. Come door-knocking with us to build our first branch in Newham

Knocking on people’s doors and running street stalls are vital ways we build the union. It’s how we find out about the housing problems in our communities and tell people about the union. It’s a great way to meet other members of the London Renters Union and have interesting and meaningful conversations with people in your community about housing.

5. Volunteer as a Local Organiser

Become a certified trained organiser to help develop relationships with and between members, recruit people to join and help develop branches. We ask our local organisers to spend roughly 2 hours per week to help build the union.

Become a certified trained organiser to help develop relationships with and between members, recruit people to join and help develop branches. (Roughly 2 hours/week time commitment)

6. Share your skills

Do you like to draw and do illustrations? Are you a whizz in the kitchen? Maybe you’re a singer or a musician? Are you able to help run events or run childcare at our meetings? If you’ve got a specific skill you’d like to share then please do get in touch!

7. Help with research, and other admin tasks.

There’s loads of ways you can help from home if you can get online. From research about estate agents to helping us work out which parts of our communities have lots of renters, if you like finding things out online we’d love to hear from you.

8. Join a working group

Working groups are made up of London Renters Union members who support a particular area of the union. Our current working groups are:

Communications – making sure our message is reaching as wide an audience as possible
Outreach – making sure we are growing, meeting new people and working with other groups
Member support – helping members to improve their housing situation and stand up to landlords and estate agents
Finance and Fundraising – we’d love some extra help from accountants and fundraisers!
Process and structure – helping the union to function in a democratic way

Being in a working group is a great way to support the work of the union on an ongoing basis. Any London Renters Union member can join a working group.

If you want to get involved with any of the above or have other ideas of how you could help, email us at hello@londonrentersunion.org or just fill out the form below.
