Millions of renters in the UK have had to deal with serious issues. Many of the laws about housing are written in the interests of landlords. Some landlords are abusive and threatening. We often feel alone and uninformed when faced with a housing problem.
But together we are powerful. As members of the union we support each other to stand up to landlords and estate agents. We’re not an advice service. Instead, we take action together by writing letters, demanding that our rights be respected and organising protest actions.
Through collective action, we’ve helped members get their deposit back or get urgent repairs made, and we’ve supported members facing eviction.
Our member support process
If you’re a member of the London Renters Union and you’re facing a housing issue, the first thing you should do is attend a London Renters Union members meeting. If you’re not already a member, you’ll be asked to join.
At a branch meeting or a member support meeting, we’ll look with you at what your options are for resolving your situation. This might involve more research or writing a letter. In many cases it can be useful to plan a protest action to put pressure on your landlord or estate agent.
It’s always up to you what steps we take together.
We mainly support each other at member meetings, but don’t worry if it’s not possible for you to make the next meeting. We’ll do our best to make sure you’re not alone.
We always do our best to support each other but there may be times where your branch or the member meeting you attend won’t have the capacity to provide loads of ongoing support. If that happens, we’ll help you get support from other organisations.
