1 May 11am-1:30pm – Renters Reform Bill: what is it and what should we be fighting for?
As we’ve seen during the pandemic, our housing system is rigged in the interests of landlords and investors. Our campaigning has won significant protections for renters such as eviction bans, but ultimately the government has chosen to prioritise the profits of landlords over our right to housing.
Back in 2019, the government promised an end to Section 21 – the piece of law that makes it so easy to evict us. This was a big win for the renters movement and something we fought hard to achieve. The government is now expected to bring in a new Renters Reform Bill this year.
This is our chance to put rent controls on the table, to demand that landlords face consequences for their actions, and to confront the rigged housing system housing system that guarantees landlords income but fails to provide us with the decent homes we need.
On May 1, join us to:
- Learn more about the housing system
- Hear from Living Rent, a Scottish tenants union, about their successful campaigning
- Find out more about the Renters Reform Bill
- Shape the LRU’s campaigning on this important new law
This event will be captioned. Please let us know if there is anything we can do to make it easier for you to attend.
JOIN THE LONDON RENTERS UNION
We’re a members-led, campaigning union and we’re taking action to make sure all Londoners have a decent, affordable and secure home. Join our community today and become part of the movement to transform the housing system.
LRU has almost doubled in size in the last 12 months, and there’s lots of interest in how we are structured and what opportunities there are for organising locally. Our structures come out of how we organise, so really this is a question about how we think we’ll win!
A special joint event by London Renters Union (LRU) and United Voices of the World (UVW). We will discuss how our struggles intersect, and strategize how we can build power both in our workplaces and in our neighbourhoods. There will be space for members from both organisations to share issues that are impacting you, there will be discussions on your employment rights and your renters rights.
On Saturday April 17th at 11am LRU will be holding its first ever Branchless Members Forum! As agreed at last year’s All Member Assembly, the forum will be a space for LRU members who don’t live in a branch area to connect with other members, learn about what is...
