London Renters Union member solidarity training programme 2024
Want to know more about what rights renters have? Want to support fellow renters with their housing problems? Want to take collective action against landlords and letting agents?
Join London Renters Union’s member solidarity training programme!
What is it? Member solidarity is the term we use to describe all the work we do to support one another with housing issues. This includes sharing information about our rights, supporting one another with practical tasks like writing to landlords, and taking action together to make sure that our rights are respected.
We’re offering a new four-part training programme covering renters rights, supporting other renters, and taking collective action. The programme is based in Brent but open to all members living in north and west London. We will also offer individual mentoring sessions with an experienced organiser, which is your opportunity to discuss how you can contribute to supporting other renters and building renter power!
When is it? The programme will take place every other Tuesday evening in February and March. The dates are:
Tuesday 6th February 6.30-8.30pm: Introduction to renters rights
Tuesday 20th February 6.30-8.30pm: Common housing problems: Disrepair, evictions and homelessness
Tuesday 5th March 6.30-8.30pm: Supporting other renters with housing issues
Tuesday 19th March 6.30-8.30pm: Taking action against landlords and letting agents
The programme will take place in Brent, near Dollis Hill station. Each session will include a break, and food will be provided. We can also offer childcare and support with transport costs.
What’s the commitment? We’re hoping that participants in the programme will apply their new skills to support members of the LRU Brent branch with their housing problems. This can involve different levels of commitment, from coming to a branch meeting every two months to being involved in our member solidarity team and regularly coming to meetings and protests. Each participant will be offered individual conversations with an organiser to figure out what type of commitment makes sense for them, and how they can continue to develop their skills and involvement after the programme.
