You’re now part of a London- wide campaign supporting each other to stay safe and win stronger protections for renters.

We can win, but we need you.

Check out our 5 next steps for taking action:

1. Join a Can’t Pay Won’t Pay Action Meeting

You can sign up for a Can’t Pay Won’t Pay Action Meeting! Connect with other renters in the same situation as you, and find out more information about the campaign and know your rights.

2. Join the London Renters Union

You can join the London Renters Union today for £4 per month.

It’s free if you don’t have an income at the moment.

The benefits of joining:

    • Be part of a city-wide community of renters fighting together.
    • We’ll do our best to support you through the Coronavirus pandemic and any other housing issues you face.
    • Get involved in our movement and take action with other renters. The more people join the union, the stronger our collective action can be.

3. Write to your landlord

If you haven’t already, you could ask start by asking your landlord for a rent reduction.

Think about the next few months. What is your income situation? Is it stable? Work out what you can afford to pay in rent once you have met your basic needs such as food and medicine.

If you’re ready to start withholding your rent or if you’re already not paying in full, you can write to your landlord to let them know and to ask them to write off any rent debt you’re in. You can use our template letter.

You might decide you want to wait a bit longer and see how the campaign grows before you start withholding your rent.

4. Know your rights!

Section 21 of the Housing Act makes it fairly easy for landlords to evict us if they want to. It’s important you’re aware of the risks you face if you get into rent debt. Make sure you find out more in our campaign Q&A.

We’ll be sharing information about our rights and how you can participate in the campaign at our renter solidarity assemblies.

5. Spread the word!

Share that you are joining in on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or wherever you go online. Sharing in WhatsApp is especially great.

Soon you’ll be able to download and print our posters to put up in your window or around your neighbourhood. But you can get creative yourself – put a bedsheet in your window, or use chalk to decorate your local pavement. Make sure to send us pictures if you do!

Have more questions? Make sure to look at our Q&A.
