Demand homes for people not profit
The Renters Rights Bill will mean new protections for renters and is a big step in the right direction. Ending cruel Section 21 evictions is a huge win for our movement, showing the power of collective action.
But there’s a problem. The government is still siding with landlords. In its current form, this bill will leave landlords with too much power over our lives:
- Affordability: there’s nothing in the Renters Rights Bill to stop landlords evicting us by hiking the rent. We need rent controls!
- Disrepair: the government is giving us new rights on disrepair, but it will still be up to failing councils to enforce the rules. We need a new right to withhold our rent when landlords leave us facing disrepair.
- Right to Rent: tenants will still need to prove their nationality status to their landlord when starting a new tenancy. This is a racist policy that turns landlords into border enforcement.
MPs will be debating amendments to the bill on these issues soon. Use the form below to email your MP to ask them to speak up in support of changes to the Renters Rights Bill that LRU and other housing movement groups are calling for.
It really helps if you edit the draft message to include your personal experiences of renting in London.
