Friday 30th August

Film Screening: Mother City
6:30 – 9pm
When the South African Western Cape government sold land which had been set aside for affordable housing to a private developer a social justice movement was born. Reclaim the City (RTC) is a movement of tenants and workers campaigning for affordable housing in Cape Town. Mother City follows the deeply personal story of one RCT activist, Nkosikhona Swartbooi and the David and Goliath story of land for people not profit in a city still defined by spatial apartheid.
Directed by Miki Redelinghuys & Pearlie Joubert. Running time: 103 minutes

Saturday 31st August

Workshop: International Housing Movements
11am – 1pm Online and In-person
Our fight for housing justice is a global one. What are the rebellious possibilities of working locally but in coalition with movements across Europe and the world? In this session we will hear from other European housing movements and envision a future for our shared struggle.

Workshop: Alternative Ways of Living Together
2.00 – 4.00pm In-person
If we want radical change to the housing system, what would we build, what might it look like, and how might we grow and maintain community together? This workshop is a chance to think about – and pool knowledge and experience of –  some other models of living, from the UK, from elsewhere, and from the recent past, to share housing hopes (and doubtless frustrations), and then to exercise our radical imaginations to envision possible futures.

LRU Summer Party
6pm-11pm
Join London Renters Union members from across all London branches and fellow tenants union members from across the UK to celebrate our collective wins and build community together over soft drinks, a discounted bar and delicious BBQ’d food.

Sunday 1st September

Workshop: Palestine, Commons and Land Justice
12 – 2pm In-person

To reflect on how we build and fight for land justice here and in Palestine we will hear a talk from Palestinian researcher, Hazem Jamjoum on connecting the struggle for housing and homes in Palestine to the UK. After a 30 minute talk we will open up discussion to everyone in the room and take a walk to a community garden nearby which is tended to by an LRU member who will show us the fruits, seeds and care which create spaces that can be shared and claimed for community building.

Final Assembly: Building the Rent Control Movement

3 – 6pm Online and In-person
Most tenants unions across the UK and Europe have active campaigns on rent controls but how can we make our movement for rent controls more powerful and winnable? This assembly will bring together members from London Renters Union, Greater Manchester Tenants Union, Living Rent, Community Action Tenants Union and others to think creatively about the actions we can take together to end soaring rents and the community displacement they cause.

Free event! Register here.
